The turbulence of the times occasionally makes me yearn for the contemplative life of Buddhist and Trappist monks. Having missed that calling, I regularly console myself with recordings possessing spiritually restorative properties. Triological, the fifth album by the trio of bassist Ben Allison, guitarist and Kansas City native Steve Cardenas and saxophonist Ted Nash, is one such offering. The set of ten ravishing miniatures is imbued with stately dignity. Relaxed and self-assured, the refined use of space and precise articulation resembles the efficacious prayers of holy men.
